In preparation for leaving for Zurich, Tony and I asked a lot of questions, read a lot of material, and talked to a lot of people. Every source said the same thing – Zurich is expensive! So Tony and I felt we were pretty prepared for the sticker shock. And then we walked into McDonald’s.
Yes, I am still vegetarian, is probably the first question of those that know me, but Tony gave up on that awhile ago. He was dying for a cheeseburger and on this cold rainy day in Zurich, I didn’t want to begrudge him. Even I was looking forward to the familiar smells of home and clogged arteries. Tony walked up to the counter, a goofy grin on his face, and was about to order when his eyes glanced up at the menu. He stopped suddenly, and started to back away slowly from the counter.
“12 francs for a big mac?” he said. “That’s like 14 dollars. And you don’t even get fries or a coke with that!”
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for my dear hubby – he came all this way with me to Zurich and he couldn’t even bring himself to spend the 12 francs on a big mac.
If you ever doubted how expensive Zurich is, McDonald’s is your litmus test. Looks like no big macs for Tony.
