A Movie Theater Adventure, Part 2 aka A Movie Review

So Tony and I made another attempt at seeing a movie today, given that it was another holiday in May (see my previous blog on the topic here).  You may recall, our first shot at this ended up with us accidentally paying to see “This is 40” in German with no sub-titles.  But we learned our lesson and did a big nose dive into the Great Gatsby, 3-D.

Well, actually our first attempt was last night – we arrived to see the English version 30 minutes early and it was all sold out.  Damn.  So this time we tried a different theater and we were in much better luck.

When paying for our tickets, they ask you to pick out where you would like to sit from a seating chart.  It’s actually kind of nice to have assigned seats because then you are never arguing with people about the seats you saved with your coat and umbrella.  So far, so good.

We were then handed our 3-D glasses and the girl added about 8 francs to the total.  Say what!?!?!  Yeah, apparently we now “own” these lovely turquoise glasses and will have to bring them the next time we go see a 3-D flick.  Well, given that this now pushed the total to 50 francs, I doubt we will be seeing another 3-D movie for quite some time.

Anyway, we had made it over the first hump.  While Tony was paying, I confirmed the big “E” and little “g/f”.  This means that the main language is in the “E” for English.  The little “g/f” represent the German and French subtitles.  Score!  You can check-it out here.

We found our seats pretty easily and waited for the lights to dim.  And alas – even the previews were in English.  We had done it.

The movie commenced along great.  This movie, while very obviously Baz Luhrman, was not quite as crazy and all over the place as Moulin Rouge.  I personally really enjoyed the imagery and music – a whole lot of Jay-Z and Beyonce was playing and I was into it big time.  We were just getting into the plot – Gatsby (super hot Leo) and “Old Sport” were plotting the next day’s tea time where Gatsby could conveniently bump into Daisy when…

Nothing.  The lights came on and the screen went dark.  What the hey?  Where’d the movie go?  And then all these Swiss randomly got up like this was totally normal and did whatever they do during an impromptu intermission with no warning.  I harumph-ed and Tony got me some popcorn.  So weird.  I did not care for this one bit.

And then like nothing, the movie came back.  It was like, 12 minutes.  Made no sense.  And the British girl next to me kept talking.  Seriously…

Anyway, the rest of the movie was really great as well.  I had recently re-read the book so it was pretty fresh in my mind.  Baz did a great job with the colors and cinematography, and the final scenes had me on the edge of my seat even though I knew what was going to happen.  What I also appreciated was some clarification on certain parts of the book that were very vague to me.  All and all I really enjoyed the film and recommend it.  I don’t think 3-D is necessary to enjoy it, though, and I still think Spider-Man was a horrible choice for Nick Carraway.
